SURFBOARD FIN GUIDE

SURFBOARD FIN TYPES

• FCS Fins - mainly for shortboard, FCS and minimals.  The most popular removable fin system on the market and the main choice for Surfboards Direct.  Common fin sets are the traditional 3 fin (thruster_set up and the now popular 4-fin (Quad) setup.  Most surfboards we sell come with the option for both and with 2 sets of fins included for free.
• Other removable fins systems - there are other fin systems on the market with Futures being the next most popular fin system
• Longboards Fins - these are attached through a larger single fin slot and a single bolt and nut. See the below video guide.
• Softboard Fins - these are plastic and are attached with two pieces - a fin and a plug that screws into each other

TIPS FOR PUTTING IN FCS FINS

• To work out which fin goes where look at the fin.  The flat side goes facing the centre of the board. For quad fins the smaller fins are normally symmetrical and go closer to the tail.
• Make sure the plug is free from sand so the fin fits in correctly. Check the fit before starting to screw.
• There's really no need to take your fins in and out unless you are traveling and need to save space.  You can wear out the screws or threads in the plug.
• Never over tighten FCS screws.  They can thread easily.  Place the fin key in gently and ensure it is a snug fit before turning.
• For plugs not in use (eg quad) screw the screw down flush with the board to avoid losing them etc
